Former Raven Jamal Lewis Declares Bankruptcy
Former NFL running back Jamal Lewis, one of the first big-name players to join the ever-growing throng of concussion plaintiffs, now has a different legal involvement, according to TMZ.com.
Lewis reportedly has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It’s not a Warren Sapp-style total liquidation, but a reorganization.
The former Raven and Brown chose the non-Chapter 7 route for good reason. Per the report, Lewis has a net worth of nearly $4 million. (Pro Football Talk)
Another sad story about a former NFL player battling financial and mental problems after leaving the game. This one hits closer to home since Jamal is a former Raven who helped lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory. He had his best season in 2003, rushing for 2,066 yards.
I know the NFL is a violent game but that doesn't mean you can't prepare financially for life after football. According to the article, Lewis still has five houses. He made more money in one year than most of us will make in our lifetime. Excuse me if I don't feel sorry for him. Hopefully Jamal can get his life back on the right track though. Only thing I do feel bad about is the physical and mental effects that he suffered during his time in the league but again football players know the danger of their profession.
