Obviously Ray Rice is still in the prime of his career and as one of the best backs in the NFL will get the majority of carries in 2012. This move is insurance for the future. The team can franchise Rice again in 2013 and after that it make look to pass the torch to Pierce, the same way McGahee did for Rice a couple years ago.
Honestly I would have preferred a wide receiver with this pick. Any elite passing game in today's NFL has three receivers and LaQuan Williams isn't worthy of a starting role. Just not anytime soon.
